Dispersible Oil suspension (OD)
Dispersible oil suspension(OD)
An insoluble pesticide solid active component in non-aqueous medium (mainly including oil-based medium or solvent medium), which is processed into fine particles and suspended in non-aqueous medium by the action of surfactants and additives to form highly dispersed and stable suspension liquid preparation, called oil suspension agent (of), oil suspension agent used for water dilution is called dispersible oil suspension agent, code is OD Oil suspension agent can increase the adhesion of pesticide on plant leaves and reduce the surface tension, so as to make the efficacy play better.
1. The difference between dispersible oil suspensions and other easily mixed forms
In the national standard GB / T 19378-2017 pesticide dosage form name and code, the dispersible oil suspension agent is described as: dispersible oil suspension agent, English name oil-based suspension concentration (oil dispersion), code OD, which refers to the effective ingredients dispersed in non-aqueous medium to form a stable suspension liquid preparation, generally diluted with water.
Dispersible oil suspensions (OD) and suspending agents (SC) and oil suspensions (OF) belong to suspension preparations. The difference between the three is shown in Table 1.

It can be seen that OD and OF, which are easily confused, are essentially identical in terms of processing, but there are differences in the way of use. In the past, some domestic and foreign literatures did not make a clear distinction between OD and OF, resulting in the mixing of two dosage forms. Now, most of the countries in China and most countries in the world use the diluted oil suspending agent which is changed to OD.
Dispersible oil suspending agent is a safe and environment-friendly dosage form. Its product composition generally includes:
1) Effective components of pesticides: the effective components of pesticides that can be processed into dispersible oil suspensions should be insoluble solids in non-aqueous media, and their melting points should be higher to ensure the solid state of Pesticide Components in the process of grinding. These active ingredients should be stable in non-aqueous media, without decomposition or reaction, to ensure the effective content of pesticide active ingredients.
2) Non aqueous media: non-aqueous media have great influence on the performance of the dispersible oil suspensions. Generally, non-aqueous media with high flash point, low volatility and low toxicity are commonly used, and the price is low, to ensure the safety, environmental protection and cost control requirements of the preparation. Non aqueous media include oil based medium and solvent medium. Oil based media include vegetable oils (such as corn oil, soybean oil, etc.), mineral oil, biodiesel, or their mixtures. Solvent media include: higher aliphatic hydrocarbons, polyols, liquid esters (such as two methyl ortho two carboxylic acid, dibutyl phthalate), methyl oleate and so on.
3) Dispersant: it is used to inhibit the flocculation and coagulation of particles in the oil phase, and to stabilize the suspension of oil phase particles, to ensure that the dispersed suspension can be diluted with water to form a uniform suspension. The emulsifiers used in individual products can also play a role in dispersing, so there is no dispersant.
4) Emulsifier: it is the key to develop the dispersible oil suspension agent. The emulsifier selected must ensure that the non-aqueous medium has good emulsification and dispersion in water, with a large amount of use (generally 15% - 20%), and the appropriate emulsifier must be selected according to the actual non-aqueous medium selected, such as vegetable oil, mineral oil, biodiesel and methyl oleate.
2. Advantages and disadvantages of dispersible oil suspending agent
The dispersible oil suspension basically keeps the advantages of the suspension: no low flash point organic solvent is used, and the problems of flammability, explosion and poisoning are avoided in the production; no dust is produced in the production and use process, which is safe for the operator and the user; the toxicity and irritation are low; the oil is used as the medium, which is an environmentally friendly dosage form; in the actual application, the help of non-aqueous medium can make it more effective.
The disadvantages of dispensable oil suspensions are mainly concentrated in the following points: difficult processing technology; less varieties of dispersers can be selected, more emulsifiers need to be added, and high technical content is required for formula screening; the finished products are prone to stratification and sedimentation; compared with the suspending agent, the price of oil medium is higher, so the cost of finished products increases more.
